Oh My God This Facebook Madness
Oh my god! Yes, another friend just disabled their Facebook account! Why is this a big deal? It shouldn't be. The big deal was said "friend" (are we still friends if we are not friends on Facebook?) had merely two hours prior than that wrote a note and tagged a bunch of us in it. What the note was about I would never know ("never" being until he re-activate his account again, just like last time). So we came home from a weekend outing, because it's the Labor Day LONG weekend. Hubby decided to check email on his phone while I put the DVD into our PS3, then freaked out because he couldn't read this note that he was tagged in. Good god, you are not being nominated for the Nobel prize here, okay? Whatever it was, I'm sure it's tedious and silly. Then he proceeded to instantly text this said friend about what happened. Really? Is that really necessary? It was like a knee jerk reflex that he must found out that minute what happened.
Said friend's response was, "I am spending too much time on Facebook. I feel that I should be spending my time on more constructive things." No kidding. What I don't understand is this: have these people no self-control at all? I, too, am fed up with all the tedious posts -- "I am at [location] doing [activities] with [individuals]." And that concerns me how? Or worse -- "I am listening to [a specific song]." Well, that's nice. Even worse -- "[Lyrics of a song that I have never heard of.]" Point? People? And the absolute worse -- "[blah blah blah, if you agree with this, repost.] Worse than the absolute worse -- "I know many won't even care enough to report." WTF people!!
But I'm not the Facebook police, people are entitled to post what they want on a social network, and it's my prerogative to read/not read. It's a free country, people. First amendment right, okay? They are allowed to post what they want (while adhering to whatever policies Facebook has, of course), but that does not mean you have to read every single word! I fail to see how Facebook can be a time sink unless you compulsively must read every post by your 300 some odd number friends! I only read intermittenly, usually when I am bored, and only read about 5 entries till I lose my attention span. Quite frankly, only 1 friend posts funny things that I care to read about. Otherwise, I read CNN finance updates. The rest are, quite frankly, simply not worth my time. So I spend maybe 10 minutes a day on it, tops. I spend more time checking email.
Second, to disable one's account right after one just posted a note and tagged everyone. Ugh, that's just attention seeking. I've linked my blog to Facebook before, and I felt that I'm forcing what I write onto others. Worse when you tagged others, so now they have to look at what it was that you wrote about them. At the very minimum, put your blog URL under your information. If they care enough, they will go read it, maybe even read it through their RSS reader, otherwise, there really is no point is shoving it down people's throat, even if you are an outstanding writer.
Third, said friend had a common friend with us before who also periodically delete "friends" and/or deactivate their account. If there's anything to be learned from that, it is -- by the third time you try to add someone as friend, they are done with you.
All in all, this is just a new way of screaming for attention. If you don't get rid of your TV because you are spending too much time watching TV or getting rid of your bed because you feel that you sleep too much, there is no real need to disable your Facebook account. Just STOP LOGGING IN!
